Wedding Cake FAQ: Everything You Need to Know
Your wedding cake isn’t just dessert; it’s a centrepiece, a talking point, and a sweet memory of your special day. At The Farmhouse Bakery, we know how important it is to get every detail just right. That’s why we’ve answered all your most common wedding cake questions here to help you feel confident about your choices and excited for the cake of your dreams.
1. How many guests should we cater for?
It’s tempting to cater for every single guest, but a good rule of thumb is to plan for 75% of your guest list, especially if your cake will be served after a full meal or as part of a dessert table. Not everyone will take a slice, and this approach helps reduce waste while ensuring there’s plenty for those who want some.
If you’re combining your cake with a dessert table (more on this below), you can reduce the number of servings further. We’re always happy to advise you based on your guest count and menu plans.
2. What should we budget for our wedding cake?
Your wedding cake budget will depend on the size and complexity of your design. Here’s a guide to help you plan:
- Small, simple two-tier cakes (serving approximately 30-50 guests): €230-€350
- Larger, highly detailed show-stopper cakes: €500-€1400.
If you have a specific vision in mind, feel free to reach out for a quote. We’ll work with you to create a cake that fits your style and budget while ensuring it’s as delicious as it is beautiful.
3. Can we mix a dessert table with our wedding cake?
Yes, and it’s a fantastic idea if you want to add variety and a touch of luxury to your celebration. A dessert table allows you to serve an array of treats like macarons, cupcakes, cookies, or even mini tarts alongside your cake. Not only does it create a stunning visual display, but it also caters to a range of tastes.
By combining your cake with a dessert table, you can order a smaller wedding cake while still ensuring your guests are spoiled for choice.
4. Should I order cake flowers from my florist?
Absolutely! We always recommend ordering your cake flowers through your florist to ensure they match the style and colour palette of your wedding. Your florist will also ensure the flowers are food-safe and prepared for use on cakes.
Once the flowers are ready, we’ll arrange them on your cake during the setup to create a cohesive and beautiful look.
5. How can we make sure we enjoy our own cake?
Your wedding day will fly by, and many couples tell us they barely had time to eat! To make sure you don’t miss out on your own cake, ask your venue to set aside a slice (or two!) and deliver it to your room. That way, you and your partner can enjoy a quiet moment together and savour the flavours you chose so carefully.
6. Do you deliver wedding cakes?
Yes, we always deliver tiered cakes. Transporting a wedding cake is delicate work, and it requires expertise to ensure it arrives safely. Letting us handle the delivery takes the stress off you and ensures your cake is professionally set up at the venue, ready for your big day.
7. When do you set up the cake?
We’ll coordinate with your venue to find the best time for setup. Usually, we set up in the morning before guests arrive. If your ceremony is taking place at the same venue, we’ll wait until the room turnover to set up your cake, ensuring no one has to move it later.
8. Can we keep the top tier for our anniversary?
While it’s a lovely tradition, we don’t recommend keeping the top tier for your anniversary, as cakes freeze best for up to three months. Instead, we offer a special anniversary option:
In return for three professional photos of your wedding cake (to use on our social media and website), we’ll gift you a complimentary bento cake (a two-serving mini cake) for your first anniversary! Simply book it with us at least 14 days in advance.
9. Can each tier be a different flavour?
Yes! You can choose a different flavour for each tier, which is a great way to cater to a variety of tastes. Some of our most popular flavours include Raspberry & White Chocolate, Victoria Sponge, and Belgian Chocolate Biscuit Cake (available for an additional fee).
10. Do you cater to allergies or dietary requirements?
Unfortunately, we’re unable to cater to allergies or special dietary requirements. As our kitchen handles common allergens such as nuts, gluten, and dairy, we cannot guarantee that any of our cakes are allergen-free.
11. Do you offer fake tiers?
Yes, we can include fake (styrofoam) tiers in your cake design if you want the look of a taller cake without the extra servings. This is a great option for creating a show-stopping design while staying within your budget.
12. How long will our cake stay fresh?
Our cakes are baked fresh for your wedding day and will stay fresh for up to three days if stored correctly. Leftover cake should be kept in an airtight container in a cool place to maintain its quality.
13. When should we book our wedding cake?
We recommend booking your wedding cake as early as possible, especially if you’re getting married during a busy season. Most couples secure their cake 6-12 months in advance. Final details, including flavours and design, must be confirmed at least 4 weeks before your wedding day.
14. Do you offer cake tastings?
Yes, we offer tasting boxes twice a year, featuring 6-8 of our most popular flavours. This is the perfect opportunity to sample our cakes and decide which flavours you’d like for your wedding. If you’re planning far in advance, we can add you to the waiting list for the next tasting round.
15. What’s included in your wedding cake service?
Our wedding cake service includes:
- A consultation to discuss your design and ideas.
- Collaboration with your florist for fresh flowers (if needed).
- Delivery and professional setup at your venue.
- Guidance and support throughout the planning process to ensure your cake is perfect.
